Introduction

This guide explains the setup of a Proxmox cluster. In detail a cluster with Ceph storage and a Two-Node cluster with quorum are described.

TL;DR

Just steps

Here just the needed steps are listed, so it is easy to setup a cluster with or without Ceph Step-by-Step. Each step references sections with more information as long as included in this document.

Setup cluster

  • Install all nodes
  • Configure node using pxreconf
  • Exchange SSH-keys between nodes
  • Install subscription key and update nodes
  • Check if all nodes are using the same kernel version
  • Delete all existing VMs on the nodes
  • Configure cluster/storage network
  • Check multicast communication
  • Create cluster on first node
  • Join the other nodes to cluster

Setup Ceph

Before starting to setup Ceph a cluster is needed.

  • Prepare disks
  • Install Ceph packages on all nodes
  • Create more Monitors
  • Create OSDs
  • Create Pool(s)
  • Create Proxmox storage

Setup ZFS

Before setting up ZFS you should decide to create a cluster first.

  • Prepare disk
  • Create ZFS on disk
  • Check Proxmox storage
